superlatives
the brits seem very fond of using them
when faced with a typical 'how are you?', the answer invariably contains the words 'awesome!', 'brilliant!', 'excellent!' and yes, the exclaimation mark is ever present.
somehow they make my 'i'm ok', 'fine' or 'great' sound woefully inadequate.

haha, and also "smashing!"
yeah, and when i say i'm ok, i get the impression they're a little disappointed with my reply.
I get what you mean. and it doesn't just happen with the brits. probably a cultural thing because to them it means nothing and brilliant! excellent! great! comes out as the expected reply even if it isn't so. people don't really pay attention to it, more like a sound the trained ear is used to hear. yet for us, we don't think it's so acceptable to say great! excellent! when the day is really, just alright. and it becomes slightly awkward as they look to carry on the conversation following ok. nothing special. hmm like that. heh.
