J, yr 4... going on to work
attended CF's bible study for the first time this wk with selvi. cranberry was supposed to come along, but something cropped up. we had a round of introductions, which explains the above title, and both selvi and i were the oldest ones in the group. (yesh, even the guys looked significantly younger. sigh!)
we learnt that the book of mark is split into two parts. the first part (mark 1:1 - mark 8:29) basically answers the question: Who is Jesus? (He is the Christ). the second part (mark 8:30 - mark 15:39) is based on 'Why did Christ have to suffer?'
we covered the gospel of mark 1:16 to 1:39. first we were asked to read the verses and then broke up into small groups to discuss and try to see why mark wrote what he did. last wk, they read the proclaimations by different sources that Jesus is King. the main learning point flows from there, that Jesus is king, therefore He has supernatural authority.
v16 - 20: Authority to call men
v21 - 28: Authority to teach and cast out demons by His teaching
v29 - 34: Authority over sickness
v35 - 39: The King's purpose in coming is to preach. healing and casting out demons are secondary as they only treat the symptooms. it is only through preaching that we can be saved.
besides what was taught explicitly, i realised that the bible ain't that hard to read after all. (perhaps the old testament, due to our lack of understanding.) but if we took the time to sit down and slowly savour The Word bit by bit, reading and understanding the bible won't seem like such an insurmountable task after all.
i also learnt that i've been reading the bible the wrong way, treating it as if a novel. reading, registering what happens, but not fully understanding what the author is trying to bring across and how it should apply to my life.
cranberry: my special edition blog just for you! hot off the press, at 2:18am, just so u can read it early tmw morn on ur home pc. heh
and, we are going to the next BS by hook or by crook!
